This pecky appearance takes years for nature to create. Pockets of swamp cypress sometimes is attacked by a fungus that leaves this “pecky” characteristic in the wood. The decay caused by this fungus is stopped when the wood is cut into lumber and kiln-dried. When stained, the “pecks” in the wood tend to soak up the stain more, allowing more character.
