CEDAR DECKING
Our CEDAR DECKING is made with Western Red Cedar, a softwood known for its stability, straight grain and durability in exterior climates. This lumber is naturally resistant to rot and decay without any treatment. Western Red Cedar is normally reddish-brown in color. This wood ages to a natural silver-gray color when left unfinished outdoors. Western Red Cedar is very popular to use in exterior projects like decks, garden beds, arbors, fences, shingles, and siding to name just a few. This wood is sometimes favored over treated yellow pine for exterior projects due to it being lighter and more stable. But Cedar does have acid properties which can be corrosive to some metals, therefore copper, stainless steel or galvanized nails or screws should be used. Lengths of Cedar Decking are available in store for 8′ through 16′ lengths.
Cedar Decking is available through our online store, TotalWoodStore.com, in 2′ through 8′ lengths. Pricing may differ online than through in store sells.
Additional Information
Cedar decking is popular for its natural beauty and durability. Here are some key characteristics of cedar decking:
- Appearance: Cedar has a warm, reddish-brown color with a smooth grain pattern, providing an attractive aesthetic that ages gracefully with a silvery patina if left untreated.
- Natural Resistance: Cedar contains natural oils and compounds that make it resistant to rot, decay, and insect damage, reducing the need for chemical preservatives.
- Workability: It is easy to cut, drill, and fasten, making it user-friendly for installation and maintenance.
- Lightweight: Cedar is relatively light compared to other hardwoods, facilitating handling and installation.
- Stability: It has good dimensional stability, meaning it resists warping, twisting, and cracking better than some softer woods.
- Maintenance: Cedar requires regular sealing or staining to maintain its appearance and protect against weathering, especially if a weathered look is not desired.
This style Cedar board is often used for decking and fencing, among other exterior projects. This 5/4 x 6 decking board measures 1″ x 5-1/2″. Boards are eased-edged, kiln-dried and a decking grade allowing for tight knots. This material is sold by the board only.
Improve the Life of your Deck –Â
Whether you are replacing a few boards, re-topping your existing structure or building a brand new deck, there are steps you should take to improve the life of your deck.
- Install Deck Flashing – Adding deck board flashing between the joists and deck boards can add years to the life of your deck. Â During rainy seasons, moisture can build up between the deck boards and the joists, causing a below ground environment. Â This excess moisture can lead to rot on joists and the bottom of the decking board. Â By adding a moisture barrier flashing, excess moisture is eliminated, allowing the boards to dry out quicker. Â We carry Deck Flash Barrier in a self-adhesive 3″x75′ roll in stock.
- Add 1/8″ Space Between boards – When using KDAT decking boards, it is always important to add a small space between the boards. Â The re-dried boards have already gone through a shrinking process in the kiln and need room to expand during a wet season. Â By providing a small 1/8″ space or the space of a framing or 16 penny nail between boards, you will provide the space the board needs.
- Â Give deck Ventilation – Decks need plenty of ventilation. Â It is recommended to have the joists at least 18″ off the ground and not close in decks underneath. Â Adding a nice open lattice under a deck skirt can provide beauty, privacy and ventilation.
- Use heavy Duty Corrosion Resistant Screws – Always use a deck fastener designed for exterior environment. Â It is recommended to use a heavy duty corrosion resistant screw or stainless steel on decking boards and joists. Â It is also recommended to use metal connectors on the joists boards and deck bands through-out the structure to add more support. Â We have several deck fastening products ideal for your deck in stock.
