General Installation Guidelines:
- Jobsite & Storage: Store flat, off the ground, under cover. Acclimate boards in the conditioned jobsite area for 24–48 hours if possible. Protect panels from prolonged exposure to moisture prior to installation.
- Substrate & Sheathing: Install over a code-compliant sheathing with an approved weather-resistive barrier (housewrap). Ensure proper flashings at windows, doors, and penetrations. Provide a minimum 1/8″ gap at vertical butt joints and around openings per manufacturer guidance.
- Fasteners: Use corrosion-resistant nails (galvanized, hot-dipped, or stainless) sized per local code and LP recommendations. Space fasteners evenly and follow recommended setback from edges to avoid splitting. Do not overdrive nails; panels should be seated firmly without crushing the face.
- Seam & Joint Treatment: Stagger end joints and maintain recommended gaps. Use proper trim and flashings at terminations. Back-prime cut edges with compatible primer to maintain moisture resistance.
- Painting & Finishing: Finish with high-quality exterior primer and topcoat compatible with engineered wood. Follow paint manufacturer’s recommendations for number of coats, sheen, and recoat times. Do not leave primed panels exposed uncoated for extended periods.
- Thermal Movement & Expansion: Allow for recommended expansion gaps and follow lap/overlap spacing guidelines. Avoid continuous vertical runs without proper movement joints as specified by manufacturer.
- Cutting & Field Modifications: Seal cut edges with recommended primer/sealer. Use carbide-tipped blades for clean cuts.
- Maintenance: Inspect finishes and flashing periodically. Repaint or touch up as needed to maintain long-term performance.
Note: These are general guidelines. Always follow LP SmartSide manufacturer installation instructions, local building codes, and paint manufacturer recommendations for best results.
