Our Treated YP KDAT Decking is an BELOW-GROUND kiln-dried Select grade. This decking gives you beauty, stability and durability. The Select grade, a step down from Clear, still provides a high-quality appearance deck at a more affordable price. There could be an occasional small knot and wane may be present on back side of board. With our decking having BELOW-GROUND retention treatment, the decking boards durability will hold up to the test of time and more climate variations through the years.
WHY DRY?
Lumber boards swell when treated as the treatment is pressurized into the core of the board. When the decking board dries, it shrinks, similar to a dense sponge drying. By having it dry in a more controlled environment in the kiln, the movement of the board is minimized and the board has already done most of it’s moving. These kiln-dried boards will typically have more movement to them when they arrive to your jobsite than a wet board, but has done most of it’s shrinking ahead of time, whereas wet treated boards typically shrink and move after being installed. When installing a kiln-dried decking, it is recommended to leave a #8 nail size spacing between decking boards to allow for drainage.
It is also recommended to put an exterior grade sealer on this wood as soon as it is installed. No extended waiting period is needed. Maintaining a sealed surface on your deck will help protect against checks and cracks that can occur with natural weathering and sun exposure.
